About HiSTCon
The Himalayas comprise the tallest mountain range in the world. Spread across five countries in Asia, the Himalayas have a strong influence on the climate, biodiversity, and culture of the Indian subcontinent. Some of the largest rivers in the world originate in the Himalayas and their drainage basins sustain the livelihoods of 600 million people. With the worsening climate crisis, ensuring sustainable development in the Himalayan region is critical not only for the region but also for the entire subcontinent. HiSTCon, a national conference on sustainable development in the Himalayan region is aimed at bringing together scientists, academicians, students, and entrepreneurs working for the sustainable development of the Himalayan region. The first HiSTCon is themed around health, heritage, climate crisis, biodiversity, and ethics.
Healthcare and Health Systems
The recent pandemic has re-emphasized the importance of healthcare. Providing healthcare facilities to remote villages in the Himalayan region has always remained a challenge. Under this theme, we focus on the latest and emerging technologies for ensuring healthcare of people in the Himalayan region.
HimVirsa
The Himalayan region is blessed with a unique culture in the form of architecture, folklore, cuisine, and handicraft. The cultural heritage of the Himalayas must be preserved along with its environment. Under this theme, we focus on science and technology for preserving the cultural heritage of the Himalayas.
Biodiversity and Conservation
The Himalayan region contains several biodiversity hotspots due to its massive variations in altitude and climate. Biodiversity and its conservation are now vital environmental issues of international concern. Under this theme, we focus on the aspects and concerns of biodiversity and on novel scientific methods of Himalayan biodiversity conservation.
Food and Zero Hunger
Aligned with sustainable development goals, we focus on innovative technologies aimed at ensuring zero hunger. The technologies may cover end-to-end sustainable crop practices, waste reduction, access to healthy food for all people, and the end of malnutrition.
Climate Crisis
Climate crisis is characterized by the threat of highly dangerous, irreversible changes in the global climate. The Himalayan region is vulnerable to climate crisis. We focus on the latest innovations aimed at mitigating the effects of the climate crisis in the Himalayan region.
Science for Farmers and Tribals
Farming in the Himalayan region is considerably different from that in other regions. Modern scientific methods of farming should be modified to suit the unique requirements of this region. The Himalayas are a home for several indigenous tribes. Innovative scientific approaches are required for conserving their culture and lifestyle in the wake of changing times. This theme will focus on current scientific methods being employed in this regard.
